The events of September 11th played a major role in SGT Geary's decision to enlist in the US Army and serve in two deployments. As a child and teenager, SGT Geary spent a great deal of time at the American Legion with his father. It became like a second home to him. He wanted to pay tribute to all those that had served before him such as the WW II and Vietnam veterans that he knew and respected. SGT Geary’s first tour in Iraq was as a tactical satellite parachute jumper. His job duties required him to be ready to jump into any location, set up a portable ground-to-satellite communications link, then move quickly to a new location. He was assigned to an infantry battalion that cleared cities of enemy combatants on the path to Baghdad. During his second tour to Iraq he was a radio repairman, but also learned on-the-job, the duties of a medic at Balad Air Base Hospital, Camp Anaconda.
