The mission of the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

  • Collects, preserve and makes accessible personal war accounts for future generations.
  • Stories collected through audio-video tape interviews, letters, postcards, memoirs, journals, etc.

Veteran Profiles for United States Veterans from:

  • World War I (1914-1920)
  • World War ll (1938-1945)
  • Korean War (1950-1955)
  • Vietnam War (1961-1975)
  • Persian Gulf War (1990-1995)
  • Iraq-Afghanistan (2001- present)

Started by US Congress:

  • Veteran History Project was created by United States Congress in 2000
  • October 27, 2000 President Bill Clinton signed VA Project into law
