Lt. Col. Gier graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where he studied electrical engineering. During his fourteen years of active duty, he flew the C-141 Starlifter world-wide for the Military Airlift Command and later for Systems Command, where he conducted systems tests. As an Aircraft Commander for Reserve Command, Lt. Col. Gier was activated for Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the build-up to the ground invasion, he delivered supplies and personnel from the United States to staging bases in England and Germany. Once Iraqi airfields were secured, he flew supplies into Iraq and returned injured military personnel to Germany and the United States on medivac flights.
