Cpl Gackowski enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and served until 1970. After Basic Training in San Diego and Supply School at Camp LeJeune, Cpl Gackowski went to Monterey CA where he studied the Vietnamese language, life, history and customs. This training helped him in his assignment in Quang Tri, Vietnam as a supply clerk because it allowed him to establish helpful dialogues with the Vietnamese people and to gain insight into the political environment. His recommendations for future generations who are considering military service is to study our Constitution and understand how it relates to current foreign affairs. Despite the negative popularity of the war, he says his service to the military made him stronger and he wishes more young men and women could have the opportunity to serve our country. He has two sons currently serving in the Navy and Army.
